18TH ANNUAL NUTCRACKER 2019 GENERAL PARENT INFO-PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!
Who can be in the Nutcracker? Any SDA dancer!
What happens at FIRST PRACTICE? Dancers are lined up by height in different groups asked to do some dancing, so we can get ideas about choreography & groupings. Everyone is cast & gets a part!
How do you decide what part I get? Casting is decided based on level, height, ability, how many dancers are going to be in the show & also what you danced in previous years.
What if I’m just a beginner? We take all dancers with all abilities. Don’t be afraid to try!
When will rehearsals be? Preschool Primary & Secondary will be FRIDAY nights; Intermediate & Advanced will be SAT afternoons.
How long will rehearsals be? Friday rehearsals are 45 minutes, Saturday rehearsals may be 1-3 hours.
What happens if I miss a practice? You should talk to your CAST OPPOSITE, so they can show you what you missed & pay careful attention at the next practice to catch up. Private practices aren’t possible.
Will I be kicked out of the show if I miss practice? Not if you miss one or two. Missing 3 or more may mean you won’t know your part well enough to perform with a confident smile. We don’t schedule excessive practices, so save missing for illness or very important family obligations that can’t be changed.
What happens if I miss a ‘MANDATORY’ date? This will be decided on a case by case basis by the director. Mandatory rehearsal dates are VERY important & usually are only missed for last minute extreme illness. You must be in town & available on mandatory dates even if you are not scheduled to practice or perform.
What happens if I am sick for the dress rehearsal or performance? Your opposite cast dancer may fill in.
Do I need special shoes or dancewear for the performances? All dancers will provide their own shoes & nude leotards (for under costume if wanted). One pair of tights provided for Preschool-Secondary dancers.
What about special hair or makeup? Preschool, Primary and Secondary don’t. Older dancers might, you will know in plenty of time to get all the supplies you need & practice, so you can look wonderful!
Do we get to keep the costumes? Nutcracker costumes are borrowed only.
What if I miss the costume fitting? A costume will be assigned to you based on size and height. Our costumes must fit many different shapes & sizes of dancers each year & therefore will not always fit each dancer perfectly. We will make sure the costume looks good & won’t fall off on stage!
What do the Nut fee and ticket sales cover? Overall production costs including costuming organization, storage, fitting, alterations & cleaning, sets maintenance, backdrop rental, dancer props, all practice time, theater rental & theater staff for all rehearsals & shows, program design, administrative staff & other misc. costs associated with putting on our 18th Annual Nutty Show!!
How much are the tickets & when can I buy them? Tickets will be on sale Sat-Nov 9, 11 am ONLINE only. All seats are $12.50 each and there is a per ticket surcharge.
How will we stay informed about the production? All communication will be via EMAIL (all BULK emails also posted to Facebook). The regular practice schedule will be on the website under ‘Dancer Info- Nutty’ tab.
Can I miss the First Practice Parent Chat? Yes, but it will be your responsibility to find out from another parent what you missed. SDA staff has no extra time to recap a meeting to parents individually, sorry!
When will we know what cast we are in/when we will be performing? A parts-only cast list will be posted showing what ROLE you are dancing on Thurs, Sept 19 at 6 pm. Specific casts (Cranberry & Pomegranate) will be posted the following Thurs, Sept 26 at 6 pm.
Can we request a specific cast to be in? You may request a specific cast, but WE CANNOT PROMISE TO FULFILL THESE REQUESTS. Casting is arranged by putting siblings in the same cast, having the same number of dancers in each cast, what dancers performed before and other considerations.
What if we go on vacation over Thanksgiving? Missing BOTH the weekend before & the weekend after means a dancer will go 3 weeks with no practice & is NOT ALLOWED. You must be in town for either the weekend before or after (preferably BOTH) Thanksgiving to be in the production.
If we drop out of the show, will the Nut fee be refunded? ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS FOR DECIDING TO QUIT THE SHOW. For INJURIES ONLY requiring a dancer to stop, a partial refund will be given decided by the director. Missing too many practice’s/unable to perform: NO CREDITS OR REFUNDS.
Where are the rehearsals and the performances? ALL PRACTICES are at the studio, even the full DRESS/COSTUME practice. The only time we’re at LAKOTA EAST HS is Performance Weekend!
